Atelier Stéphane Guégan specialises in the painting of XVII th, XVIII th and XIX th century.

We create painted decorations medium an large, originals or reproductions from such as Charles Lebrun, Jean Baptiste Tiepolo, Paul Baudry...

With more than 20 years experience in the art world. I share my time between the creation, the realisation and teaching of different techniques of decorative painting and trompe l'oeil (marble effect, wood effect, frescos, ornamentations, gilding...)

Currently the workshop concentrates on historical decorative painting, mythological or religious respecting the methods and styles of each periods.

We work in France as well as abroad, more often than not in historical or religious buildings, hotels, castles ...

Our realisations are created in the heart of our workshops or onsite, depending on of the customer's request or by the constraints imposed by the work itself. We can also accomadate very large works of art.

I invite you to contact me in order that we can study your project together.

A little technique ...

Realisation in the workshop or on site.

In the workshop : the materials most used are canvas ( linen, cotton, synthetics) and polyester film.

They are all destined to be mounted except in particular instances such as stretched canvas.

The size does not exceed 2m10 for a length of 20m. The large works would be assembled in

several juxtaposed sequences, cf fig. a, b et c.

Historically the fabric is that used by the artists. This offers a certain flexibility for mounting,

with the obvious advantage to adapting to a wall or ceiling which account for defaults

and irregularites.

Furthermore the grain of the canvas is well adapted to the techniques of oil paintings.

The polyester film has a great rigidity with a thickness of 75µ that can be useful.

With the diversity of possible materials, it will be apparent to the client, assisted

by my advice in choosing the material best suited to the project.

On site : Even though a mostly work at the workshop, we are able to realise the work on site,

at the requestof the client or if the surface dictates (dome, alcove, column).

However this method is only carried out under certain circumstance.

In effect, a clean and sound surface is indispensible at the durability of the project.

We always study the phesability of this method.

In conclusion, it is important to note that work on site costs more because of the contraints

of putting in to place.

At the beginning of a artwork...

The creation of an original artwork represents a large part of artistic work.

Firstly, i proceed with a series of aquarelle studies presented to my clients.

The first stage finished, i make a large scale model, nearer in quality and

composition to the end result.

First stage

In the first instance, i prepare drawings entirely in pastels

before staining applying the base paint.

In that way, i can judge the balance of composition

and validate my choices.

clear ochre. (2 x 1,56m x 4,5m)

Staining

I start staining with quick stokes using acrylic paint

which has he advantage of drying quickly.

It is interesting for me to be able to put large amounts

on the whole of the subject before finishing the work

with the oil paint.

Oil painting

Welcome to the heart of the artistic work.

It is the most demanding stage. The oil brings the richness

and the depth of colours and subtle nuances.

It gives life to the artwork.

Preservation of the work

All realisations benefit from special care bought by

a prospective varnish of high quality applied in multiple layers.

The varnish also plays a part in the final finish

(brillant, satin, matt or wax).

On the whole opting for a matt finish or wax for the representations

of the figures and on ceilings, and a brillant finish or satin finish

for the desired result for the materials ie : wood effect, marble effect

and others.

Reproduction of work of art

Along side our original works, we offer reproductions

of tableaus or frescos from antiquity to XIX th century.

The realisation would be true to the work of the artist

or could be inspired should you wish.

Perspective study

A number of trompe l'oeil are composed with architectural elements.

To this end, a thorough study of the perspective

is indispensable as is the phase of creativity.

Above : study of balustrades and columns for a ceiling with rotunda

Below cons : study of ornamentation work for pillars whit shadow

Projects on a grander scale

Even if a large part of our works are made in the workshop,

under a certain circumstances we can put all the necessary

elements in place on site.

Shown here is part of a church project restoration.
